Driver/Operator

Salary Range: $19.00 - $29.00 Hourly

The Driver/Operator is responsible for operating many different types of equipment, including brush chippers, stump grinders, skid steers, backhoes, walk behind/ ride on trenchers, skip loaders, excavators, and others as assigned. In addition, the Driver/Operator is responsible for driving a commercial truck that can carry a load up to 26,000 GVWR. The Associate transports and delivers tree and landscape debris or other items. Drivers may also be required to load and unload materials.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operates equipment, which entails running, maneuvering, navigating, and driving.
  • Inspects equipment daily before leaving the yard confirming proper and safe operation.
  • Drives trucks and equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Positions, sets up, and operates brush chippers, stump grinders and a variety of construction equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Performs a variety of technical and manual labor activities and duties as required to operate arbor care equipment including, but not limited to: aerial devices, generators, portable power and hand equipment and tools.
  • Inspects, maintains, cleans, stocks, and loads various arbor care and construction related tools and equipment.
  • Performs daily, weekly, and monthly equipment inspections. Tests and completes record keeping measures of inspection and test completions.
  • Uses, wears, and maintains various types of personal protective clothing and gear.
  • Uses various communication equipment including two radios, telephones, cell phones, computers, etc.
  • Participates in and ensures trucks and equipment are properly returned to service after incidents, usage, and or training events.
  • Participates in training classes to maintain driving and operating techniques and certifications.
  • Reports all incidents or accidents and completes/submits the required forms, documents and/or reports as required.
  • Inspects vehicles in accordance with Pre-Trip inspection requirements.
  • Maintains cleanliness of assigned trucks and equipment at all times.
  • Observes all company policies and procedures including dress standards.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Thorough working knowledge of all trucks and equipment used in the landscape/arbor industry including their operation and maintenance requirements.
  • Ability to operate trucks and equipment safely, appropriately, and effectively.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written orders and instructions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to efficiently and accurately use an electronic hand held device to record employee time worked.

REQUIRED LICENSE/CERTIFICATION

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and proof of auto insurance.
  • Commercial drivers license is not required unless assigned to a vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds then a Class A is preferred, but a B is required.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED) preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Constant standing, sitting, walking, stooping, squatting, bending, twisting, traversing uneven ground, reaching, grasping and gripping (hand tools and equipment), getting in and out of vehicles throughout the day and lifting or carrying objects up to 50 lbs.

EQUIPMENT/MACHINARY

  • Hydraulic systems, electric hoists, commercial construction equipment, commercial trucks, pneumatic and electric braking systems, pintle hitch, standard ball and receiver connectors, basic hand tools, chains and binders, come-alongs, tarps, power take off systems, forklifts and rope.
